Samyang AF 24mm f/1.8 FE

A few months ago, Samyang launched a new 24mm f/1.8 Tiny series lens for Sony full-frame mirrorless cameras. It is already available, so I would like to share my experience from using it in practice.

Like it usually goes with Samyang, after half a year we saw another “pocket” model at a reasonable price, this time for the Tiny series, which includes 18-mm f/2.8, 35-mm f/1.8, 45-mm f/1.8, and 75-mm f/1.8 lenses. Up until recently, the lineup did not offer too many solid lens options with an f/2 aperture or smaller to the owners of Sony mirrorless cameras, but the addition of the newest model to the range, with a popular 24-mm focal length, has remedied this.

So, Samyang continues their successful format and, in addition to fast AF and an adjustable focusing ring function, launches another new feature for the classic button – the ability to calibrate and immediately and repeatedly recall the focus position to infinity, especially suitable for astrophotography.

After the previous success of Samyang 35-mm f/1.8, I did not expect a significant step forward; however, also in terms of usage, I was surprised by a slightly faster AF and despite the broader angle, it has increased by only 8 mm to 71.5 mm and it is heavier by 20 g (230 g) – almost identical to the already established 75-mm f/1.8 and not at all different from the Tiny series.

I immediately tried the lens during a walk in Prague, where it has been very suitable for manual photo shoots in the evenings, thanks to its focus and brightness. In addition to the sharpness already focused (and a noticeable improvement in contrast when using a minimum aperture f/2), I was surprised by a very pleasant bokeh, which I was not used to anymore after a year working with 20 mm f/1.8 thanks to the wide angle lens.

The 24-mm lens is not a classic portrait tool, but it is excellent for situational use and reportage portraits in a particular situation.

To conclude, I would summarise my experience with the lens by saying that at a price of EUR 469, it is a bargain compared to more affordable 24-mm lenses, and I am very much looking forward to using it not only for street and evening walks, where it is the missing piece of the puzzle, but also for different social events.
