Roine is a photographer based in Örebro, Sweden. Over the years, he has worked with many well-known clients and magazines, but what stands out the most is the 15 book titles in his list of works, one of which "Nära fåglar" was nominated for both the August Prize and became the winner of Swedish Book Art 2017. He is passionate about analogue photography where he likes to shoot in large formats. Roine uses Ilford film HP5 plus and FP4 plus for black and white, and Kodak Portra 400 for colour, and develops in Jobo's machines. A newfound friend for developing large formats is Jobo's black and white developer Alpha B&W Developer. Roine also has a great weakness for polaroid photography, both old expired films and the new ones, he absolutely loves the material and the physicality of that type of photography.

Questions & answers

  1. How did you start with photography/video?
I have always had a need to express myself in pictures, as long as I can remember actually. It started already as an early teenager where nature pictures were most important. The analogue process has always been there as an important part.
  2. How would you describe your style?
During my 30 years as a photographer, I have had many styles, but the most important thing has been to follow my heart.  Simply put, working close to yourself. The projects I have chosen to work on have led me into different types of photography over the years.
  3. What inspires you?
    Life itself inspires me.
  4. What is your dream assignment or project?
To make really large silver gelatin prints in my own lab, images of several meters would be nice.
  5. What is your best advice for others who want to develop as photographers?
Experiment, try things out and start shooting series of images early on, it is instructive to put images together.

What do you have in your bag?

  1. What is the most important thing you have in your bag?
I usually have a whole bunch of analogue cameras with me when I shoot, some pictures need that special character that some cameras give to the picture. I rarely leave home without a camera in my pocket.
  2. What cameras do you use?
Right now I mostly use my 8x10 Chamonix and Pentax 67 II with a bunch of different lenses.
